Description

This Garlic Philly Cheesesteak Bread combines the rich flavors of seared flank steak, sautéed onions and bell peppers, and melted provolone cheese all layered inside a crispy French bread loaf slathered with garlic butter. Ready in just 30 minutes, it’s a perfect crowd-pleasing sandwich that bakes to golden, cheesy perfection for a delicious twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Cheese

  • 1 pound flank steak
  • 8 ounces provolone cheese

Vegetables

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced

Bread and Other

  • 1 fresh French bread loaf
  • Softened butter (about 2 tablespoons)
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it’s ready to melt the cheese and crisp the bread in the final step.
  2. Prepare Garlic Butter: In a small bowl, mix softened butter with minced garlic and a pinch of salt to create a flavorful garlic butter spread.
  3. Sear Steak: Season the flank steak as desired and sear it in a skillet over medium-high heat for about 3 minutes on each side until browned but not overcooked. Then remove from heat and let the steak rest, which allows the juices to redistribute.
  4. Sauté Vegetables: Using the same or a clean skillet, sauté the sliced onions and bell peppers for approximately 5 minutes until they become tender and lightly caramelized, enhancing their natural sweetness.
  5. Prepare Bread: Cut the French bread loaf lengthwise to create two halves. Evenly spread the garlic butter on both halves, which will add rich flavor and help toast the bread to a golden finish.
  6. Assemble Sandwich: Layer the sliced and rested flank steak evenly over one half of the bread, then add the sautéed onions and bell peppers on top. Finally, arrange the provolone cheese slices over the vegetables.
  7. Bake: Place the assembled bread halves on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until the cheese melts completely and the bread edges turn golden brown and crispy.

Notes

  • Allow the steak to rest after searing for juicier, more tender slices.
  • Use a sharp knife to slice the steak thinly for authentic texture.
  • Feel free to add hot peppers or mushrooms to the vegetable mix for extra flavor.
  • Serve immediately after baking to enjoy the cheese at its melty best.
  • Leftover sandwich slices can be reheated in the oven to maintain crispiness.
