This Cheesy Bread recipe is a quick and easy homemade bread that combines the tanginess of Greek yogurt with the rich flavors of cheddar and Parmesan cheese. Perfectly golden and crispy on the outside, soft and cheesy on the inside, this rustic round loaf is ideal as a comforting side or a savory snack.
Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 2 cups self-rising flour (or all-purpose flour + 2 tsp baking powder + ½ tsp salt)
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (full-fat recommended)
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 1–2 tbsp milk (only if dough is too dry)
Topping
- ¼ cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)
- Chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Prep the oven and baking sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent sticking.
- Mix the dough: In a large bowl, combine the self-rising flour, Greek yogurt, cheddar cheese, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and black pepper. Stir until a shaggy dough forms. If the dough feels too dry, gradually add 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk to achieve the right consistency.
- Shape the loaf: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and shape it into a rustic round loaf about 6 to 7 inches wide. Place the shaped loaf onto the prepared baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, score an “X” on top to allow steam to escape during baking.
- Add cheese topping: Sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar and grated Parmesan cheeses evenly over the top of the loaf.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the bread for 20 to 25 minutes. The bread should be golden brown on top and sound hollow when tapped, indicating it is cooked through.
- Butter and cool: Remove the bread from the oven and immediately brush the top with melted butter for a glossy, flavorful finish. Let the bread cool for about 5 minutes before slicing.
- Serve: Optionally garnish with chopped fresh parsley and serve the bread warm for the best taste and texture.
Notes
- You can substitute self-rising flour with all-purpose flour combined with baking powder and salt as indicated.
- If you prefer a stronger garlic flavor, add more garlic powder or fresh minced garlic.
- The bread is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for 1-2 days.
- For a crispier crust, bake directly on a preheated pizza stone or cast iron pan.
- Use full-fat Greek yogurt for richer flavor and better texture.
- Adjust toppings to your preference with other cheeses like mozzarella or asiago.
