Description

A classic American Turkey Melt sandwich featuring sliced cooked turkey breast, melted cheddar or Swiss cheese, and fresh tomato layered between buttery toasted bread. Perfect for a quick, satisfying lunch or dinner with optional greens for an extra fresh touch.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Condiments

  • 8 slices sandwich bread or sourdough
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise or Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

Filling

  • 8 oz sliced cooked turkey breast
  • 4 slices cheddar or Swiss cheese
  • 1 small tomato, sliced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: baby spinach or arugula for extra greens

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Spread mayonnaise or Dijon mustard evenly on one side of each bread slice to add flavor and moisture.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich: On 4 slices of bread, layer the turkey breast slices, seasoned tomato slices with a pinch of salt and pepper, cheese slices, and optional baby spinach or arugula. Cover with the remaining bread slices, mayo side down.
  3. Heat the Skillet: Place a skillet or griddle over medium heat and allow it to warm up, which ensures even toasting for your sandwiches.
  4. Butter the Bread: Spread the softened butter on the outside (top and bottom) of each assembled sandwich. This butter layer will help achieve a golden, crispy crust.
  5. Cook the Sandwiches: Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, pressing gently with a spatula to meld the ingredients and melt the cheese, until the bread is golden brown and crispy.
  6. Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the heat, slice each in half for easy eating, and serve hot for the best flavor and texture experience.

Notes

  • Add crispy bacon or avocado slices for extra flavor and texture.
  • Try swapping in different cheeses like provolone or pepper jack for varied taste profiles.
  • This recipe works great with leftover Thanksgiving turkey to make a quick meal.
