Description

A flavorful copycat version of the classic Steak ‘n Shake Garlic Double Steakburger featuring juicy double patties infused with garlic butter, melted American cheese, and toasted garlic buns. Perfect for a hearty American main course with optional grilled onions and pickles for added zest.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns (buttered)
  • 2 tablespoons garlic butter (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for grilling)
  • Optional toppings: grilled onions, pickles

For Garlic Butter (if homemade)

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic salt
  • ½ teaspoon dried parsley

Instructions

  1. Make the Garlic Butter (if homemade): In a small bowl, thoroughly mix the softened butter with garlic powder, garlic salt, and dried parsley until well combined. Set aside to let the flavors meld.
  2. Form and Cook the Patties: Divide the ground beef into eight thin patties, approximately 2 ounces each, pressing them flat for even cooking. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat and add olive oil. Place the patties in the skillet and cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side, pressing them down gently with a spatula to develop crispy edges. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of American cheese on four of the patties, then top each with another patty to form four double burgers; let cheese melt.
  3. Toast the Buns: While the patties cook, spread garlic butter on the cut sides of each hamburger bun. Toast the buns butter-side down in a clean pan or on the griddle until they turn golden and crispy. For added garlic flavor, lightly sprinkle garlic salt on the toasted buns.
  4. Assemble: Place each double steakburger on the bottom half of the garlic-toasted buns. Add optional toppings like grilled onions or pickles if desired, then top with the bun tops. Serve immediately to enjoy the melty, garlicky goodness.

Notes

  • For extra garlic flavor, brush the tops of the finished burgers with melted garlic butter before serving.
  • Serve with thin-cut fries to emulate the classic Steak ‘n Shake dining experience.
  • Using an 80/20 ground beef blend ensures juicy and flavorful patties with enough fat for crisping edges.
  • If preferred, homemade garlic butter can be stored in the refrigerator wrapped tightly and used within a week.
