Description

Classic American Sloppy Joe made with ground beef simmered in a tangy, flavorful tomato sauce and served on soft hamburger buns. This easy stovetop recipe is perfect for a quick weeknight dinner that kids and adults will love.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Sauce

  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

To Serve

  • Hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Heat the Oil and Cook Beef: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet. Sauté for 3–4 minutes until the vegetables are softened and fragrant.
  3. Add Sauce Ingredients: Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
  4. Simmer: Reduce heat to low and simmer the mixture for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick and saucy.
  5. Serve: Spoon the hot sloppy joe mixture onto hamburger buns and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a leaner version, substitute ground turkey or chicken for the beef.
  • Toast the hamburger buns for extra flavor and texture.
  • Add a dash of hot sauce or smoked paprika if you like a spicy kick.
