Dressed with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, it’s a festive twist on a classic Italian salad perfect for autumn gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
Mozzarella Skulls
- 8 oz Fresh Mozzarella Pearls (Larger blocks can be used if pearls aren’t available)
Salad Components
- 1 pint Cherry Tomatoes (Opt for dark varieties for a Halloween theme)
- 1 cup Fresh Basil Leaves (Substitute with purple basil if desired)
Dressing
- 2 tbsp Olive Oil (Can be replaced with avocado oil)
- 1 tbsp Balsamic Vinegar (Consider balsamic glaze for a sweeter twist)
- Salt, to taste
- Black Pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Preparation: Gather all ingredients and have a skull-shaped mold ready for shaping the mozzarella. Preheat your oven or prepare your microwave for heating the cheese.
- Shaping Mozzarella Skulls: Place the fresh mozzarella pearls into the skull molds. Heat them in the microwave on high for 20-30 seconds or bake in an oven preheated to 350°F for 6-8 minutes to soften the cheese so it molds into the skull shape.
- Draining Excess Liquid: After heating, gently press the mozzarella in the molds using paper towels to absorb any excess moisture. This prevents sogginess and helps the cheese hold shape better.
- Chilling the Mozzarella: Refrigerate the molds with the mozzarella for about 10 minutes to allow the cheese to firm up into distinct skull shapes before removing from the molds.
- Assembling Salad: Carefully pop the cooled mozzarella skulls out of the molds and place them in a mixing bowl with halved cherry tomatoes.
- Final Dressing and Serving: Drizzle the salad ingredients with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, toss gently to coat. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Top the salad with fresh basil leaves before transferring to a serving plate and serving.
Notes
- If fresh mozzarella pearls aren’t available, larger blocks can be cut into smaller pieces to fit molds.
- Using dark cherry tomatoes enhances the Halloween theme visually.
- Substitute olive oil with avocado oil for a different flavor profile.
- Balsamic glaze can replace vinegar for a sweeter taste.
- Be gentle when handling the mozzarella skulls to maintain their shape.
- This salad is best served fresh but can be refrigerated for a short time before serving.
