Ingredients
Scale
Cake
- 1 box yellow or white cake mix (plus ingredients required for the mix: eggs, oil, water)
Tres Leches Mixture
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Topping
- Whipped cream (for topping)
- Fresh fruit (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the Cake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare the boxed cake mix according to the package instructions by combining it with the required eggs, oil, and water. Pour the batter into a 9×13-inch baking pan and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely before proceeding.
- Make the Tres Leches Mixture: In a medium bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, whole milk, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and fully combined.
- Soak the Cake: Once the cake has cooled, use a fork to poke holes evenly all over the surface. Slowly pour the milk mixture over the cake, ensuring it seeps into the holes and saturates the cake evenly. Cover and refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight, to let it fully absorb the liquid.
- Top with Whipped Cream: Just before serving, spread a generous layer of whipped cream over the soaked cake. Garnish with fresh fruit, such as berries or sliced mangos, if desired to add a pop of color and freshness.
Notes
- Use whole milk for the best creamy texture in the tres leches mixture.
- For a lighter topping, you may substitute whipped cream with a whipped topping or meringue.
- Chilling the cake overnight allows maximum absorption, resulting in a perfectly moist dessert.
- Fresh fruit adds a nice contrast but is optional based on preference.
- Ensure the cake is completely cooled before pouring the milk mixture to prevent it from becoming soggy too quickly.
