Description

This Saltine Toffee Recipe, also known as Christmas Crack, is an easy and delicious holiday treat featuring a crunchy layer of saltine crackers topped with buttery brown sugar toffee and melted chocolate. Garnished with optional toppings like chopped pecans, sea salt flakes, or sprinkles, this sweet and salty snack is perfect for festive occasions or anytime you crave a simple yet irresistible dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Base Layer

  • 40 saltine crackers (1 sleeve)

Toffee Sauce

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar

Topping

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Optional toppings: chopped pecans, sea salt flakes, sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Prepare a 10×15-inch rimmed baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper or foil to prevent sticking and for easy cleanup.
  2. Arrange Crackers: Lay the 40 saltine crackers in a single layer across the lined baking sheet, ensuring they cover the entire surface evenly.
  3. Make Toffee Sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup unsalted butter and 1 cup packed brown sugar. Stir constantly as the mixture melts and comes to a gentle boil. Continue boiling for 3 minutes until it thickens and bubbles.
  4. Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the arranged saltines. Use a spatula to spread the sauce ensuring all crackers are coated.
  5. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbling vigorously.
  6. Add Chocolate Topping: Remove from the oven and promptly sprinkle 2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Allow to sit for 2–3 minutes so the chips soften and melt.
  7. Spread Chocolate: Using a spatula, smooth out the melted chocolate into an even layer over the toffee.
  8. Add Optional Toppings: Sprinkle chopped pecans, sea salt flakes, or sprinkles over the melted chocolate if desired for added flavor and texture.
  9. Cool and Set: Let the toffee cool completely at room temperature, then transfer the baking sheet to the refrigerator for 1 hour to fully set the chocolate and toffee.
  10. Serve: Once firm, break the toffee into pieces and serve. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or refrigerate for a firmer texture.

Notes

  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, or refrigerate if you prefer a firmer texture.
  • You can substitute milk or dark chocolate chips in place of semi-sweet chips according to your taste preferences.
