Description

Delightful puff pastry hearts topped with a sweet vanilla icing, perfect for Valentine’s Day or a charming brunch treat. Flaky, golden, and lightly sweetened with cinnamon and sugar, these pastries are both easy to make and beautifully festive.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

Icing

  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1–2 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Red or pink food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Prepare Puff Pastry: Lightly flour your work surface and unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet. If desired, combine granulated sugar and ground cinnamon and sprinkle evenly over the pastry for enhanced flavor.
  3. Fold the Pastry: Fold the long sides of the pastry inward toward the center so they meet in the middle, then fold each side inward again. Fold one half over the other like closing a book to create a layered log.
  4. Slice and Shape: Slice the folded log into ½-inch pieces. Gently pinch one side of each piece to shape them into hearts.
  5. Apply Egg Wash: Place the shaped hearts on the prepared baking sheet and lightly brush them with the beaten egg wash to achieve a golden glossy finish when baked.
  6. Bake: Bake the hearts for 12–15 minutes, or until they are golden brown and puffed up beautifully. Remove from the oven and allow them to cool on a wire rack.
  7. Make the Icing: Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add red or pink food coloring if desired to brighten the icing for a festive look.
  8. Decorate: Drizzle or pipe the icing over the cooled puff pastry hearts. Allow the icing to set before serving for best presentation and taste.

Notes

  • Perfect for Valentine’s Day or as a sweet treat during brunch.
  • For an extra indulgence, dip one side of each pastry heart in melted chocolate.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days to maintain freshness.
