Scale
Seafood and Vegetables
- 1 lb cooked shrimp, peeled and deveined
- ½ cup red onion, finely chopped
- 1 jalapeño, seeded and finely diced
- 1 medium cucumber, peeled and diced
- 1 avocado, diced
- 1 Roma tomato, diced
- ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
Sauce and Seasonings
- 1 cup tomato juice or Clamato
- ½ cup ketchup
- ¼ cup fresh lime juice (about 2 limes)
- 1 tablespoon hot sauce (such as Valentina or TapatÃo)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Garnish
- Lime wedges for serving
Instructions
- Prepare the sauce: In a large bowl, whisk together the tomato juice, ketchup, lime juice, and hot sauce until the ingredients are well combined, forming a flavorful tangy base.
- Add the shrimp and vegetables: Add the cooked shrimp, finely chopped red onion, diced jalapeño, diced cucumber, diced tomato, and chopped fresh cilantro to the bowl. Gently stir to evenly coat all the ingredients in the sauce without breaking up the shrimp.
- Season and chill: Season the mixture with salt and black pepper to your taste. Cover the bowl and chill the shrimp cocktail in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together beautifully.
- Add avocado and serve: Just before serving, gently fold in the diced avocado to preserve its texture and flavor. Serve the cocktail cold in glasses or bowls, garnished with lime wedges and additional cilantro if desired.
Notes
- Serve with saltine crackers, tortilla chips, or tostadas for added crunch.
- For an extra depth of flavor, add a dash of Worcestershire sauce or a splash of orange soda, which some traditional recipes include.
- Ensure shrimp is fully cooked beforehand as this recipe involves no cooking.
- Adjust the amount of hot sauce depending on your preferred spice level.
