Ingredients
Scale
Crust
- 2 cups graham cracker crumbs
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
Filling
- 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1/2 cup key lime juice (fresh or bottled)
- 1 tablespoon key lime zest
- 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese (softened)
Whipped Cream
- 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Garnish (optional)
- Extra lime slices or zest
- Extra whipped cream
Instructions
- Prepare the crust: In a medium bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs and melted butter. Stir until the crumbs are evenly coated, then set aside for layering.
- Make the key lime filling: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. Add the sweetened condensed milk, key lime juice, and lime zest, mixing until the mixture is creamy and well combined.
- Whip the cream: In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form, creating a light and fluffy whipped cream.
- Combine filling and whipped cream: Gently fold half of the whipped cream into the key lime mixture to lighten it, then carefully fold in the remaining whipped cream until fully incorporated.
- Assemble the trifle: In a large trifle dish or individual serving cups, layer graham cracker crumbs on the bottom. Spoon a generous layer of the key lime filling over the crumbs. Continue layering, ending with a creamy layer of filling on top.
- Chill the trifle: Refrigerate the assembled trifle for at least 2 hours to allow it to set and the flavors to meld together.
- Garnish and serve: Before serving, garnish with extra lime zest, lime slices, or additional whipped cream if desired. Serve chilled for a refreshing dessert.
Notes
- For a shortcut, substitute homemade whipped cream with store-bought whipped topping.
- This recipe can be assembled in one large trifle dish or divided into 6–8 individual cups for serving.
- Ensure the cream cheese is softened before mixing to avoid lumps in the filling.
- Chilling time is important for setting the layers—do not skip or reduce it significantly.
