Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried rosemary)
- ½ teaspoon coarse sea salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 ¾ cups warm water
- ¼ cup olive oil, plus extra for drizzling and greasing
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Mix Dough: Add the flour, salt, and 2 tablespoons of olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir until a soft, sticky dough forms.
- Knead Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- Prepare Baking Pan: Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with olive oil. Transfer the risen dough to the pan and gently stretch it to fit the pan shape.
- Second Rise: Cover the dough and let it rise again for about 20 minutes to slightly puff up.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C) while the dough undergoes its second rise.
- Create Dimples & Add Toppings: Use your fingers to press dimples all over the surface of the dough. Drizzle the remaining olive oil over the top, then sprinkle the chopped rosemary and coarse sea salt evenly.
- Bake: Bake the focaccia for 20 to 25 minutes until it turns golden brown and cooked through.
- Cool & Serve: Allow the bread to cool slightly in the pan before slicing and serving warm.
Notes
- You can add toppings like sliced olives, cherry tomatoes, or caramelized onions before baking for extra flavor.
- Focaccia is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
