Description

Grandma’s Onion Squares are a delightful savory treat featuring caramelized onions baked into a soft, flavorful batter. This comforting recipe combines the sweetness of slowly sautéed onions with a tender, cheesy base, perfect for serving as an appetizer, snack, or side dish.

Ingredients

Scale

Onions & Butter

  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons butter

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup milk

Optional

  • ½ cup grated cheddar cheese (optional, for extra flavor)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions and sauté them until they become soft and golden brown, about 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning. Once caramelized, remove from heat and set aside to cool.
  2. Prepare the Batter: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until evenly combined. In a separate bowl, beat the egg and mix in the milk thoroughly. Add the cooled caramelized onions (and cheddar cheese, if using) to the wet mixture and stir well to combine. Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until a smooth batter forms.
  3. Bake the Squares: Grease an 8×8-inch baking dish to prevent sticking. Pour the prepared batter into the dish and spread it evenly across the surface. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the edges turn golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Cool and Serve: Remove the baking dish from the oven and let the onion squares cool for a few minutes to set. Cut into squares and garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Caramelizing the onions slowly is crucial to bring out their natural sweetness and deepen the overall flavor.
  • Using cheddar cheese is optional but adds a lovely richness to the recipe.
  • Make sure to grease the baking dish well to prevent the squares from sticking.
  • This dish can be served warm as an appetizer or side dish and pairs well with soups or salads.
  • Allowing the squares to cool slightly before cutting ensures clean slices.
