Dough Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus more for brushing)
Garlic Herb Butter
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs or parsley
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt (for topping)
- Grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Activate yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm water, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating that the yeast is active.
- Make dough: Stir in the all-purpose flour, salt, and olive oil into the yeast mixture. Knead the dough by hand or with a mixer for 6–8 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- First rise: Cover the bowl and place it in a warm spot. Let the dough rise for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- Preheat oven & prepare baking sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Shape breadsticks: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope shape and place them spaced on the prepared baking sheet.
- Second rise: Cover the shaped breadsticks loosely and let them rise for 20 minutes until slightly puffed.
- Prepare garlic herb butter: In a small bowl, mix melted butter with minced garlic, dried Italian herbs (or parsley), garlic powder, and salt to create a flavorful brushing mixture.
- Brush & bake: Generously brush each breadstick with the garlic herb butter mixture. Bake in the preheated oven for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Finish & serve: Immediately after baking, brush the breadsticks with more garlic herb butter. If desired, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top. Serve warm for best flavor and texture.
Notes
- For cheesy breadsticks, sprinkle shredded mozzarella on top before baking.
- Leftover breadsticks can be reheated in the oven at 350°F for a few minutes to restore crispness.
