This French Onion Dip is a classic party favorite with a rich, caramelized onion flavor. Creamy and tangy, it’s perfect for dipping chips, crackers, or veggies.

Onion Mixture:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
Dip Base:
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 1/2 cups sour cream
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- Chopped chives for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Caramelize Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the chopped onion, salt, pepper, and sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 25-30 minutes until the onions are deeply golden and caramelized.
- Prepare Dip Base: In a medium bowl, mix the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder until smooth. Stir in the cooled onions until well combined.
- Chill and Serve: Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow flavors to develop. Garnish with chopped chives before serving if desired.
Notes
- For a lighter version, substitute Greek yogurt for some or all of the sour cream.
- This dip pairs perfectly with chips, crackers, or fresh veggies.
