Description

This Easy Hibachi Steak with Fried Rice recipe brings the flavors of Japanese hibachi cooking to your home kitchen. Featuring tender NY strip steak marinated in a savory blend of soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger, paired with flavorful fried rice loaded with vegetables and aromatic seasonings, this dish can be prepared in just 30 minutes. Perfect for a quick weeknight dinner that tastes like a restaurant favorite.

Ingredients

Scale

Steak Marinade

  • 1½ lbs NY Strip Steak
  • 2 tbs low sodium soy sauce (or tamari)
  • 2 tbs sesame oil (or olive oil)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbs ginger paste
  • 1 tbs Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbs honey (optional)

Fried Rice

  • 6 cups cooked + cooled Basmati rice
  • 2 tbs sesame oil (or olive oil)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 eggs
  • 12 oz bag frozen vegetables, thawed
  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tbs butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbs ginger paste
  • 1 tbs sesame seeds

Sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbs Sriracha
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Steak: In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, ginger paste, Worcestershire sauce, and optional honey until well combined. Coat the NY strip steak with this marinade and let it sit for at least 10 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  2. Prepare the Cooking Surface: Heat a griddle or two pans on high heat for about 4 minutes to ensure they are very hot, which is essential for achieving that authentic hibachi sear and flavor.
  3. Cook the Fried Rice: Add sesame oil to the hot griddle or pan(s), then add the cooked and cooled basmati rice, diced onion, and eggs. Toss and mix everything continuously while cooking for 3 minutes until the eggs start to set and the rice is heated through.
  4. Add Vegetables and Seasonings: Stir in the thawed frozen vegetables. Then add the soy sauce, butter, minced garlic, ginger paste, and sprinkle sesame seeds over the rice. Continue cooking for 5 minutes, allowing a golden brown crust to form on the bottom of the rice for the signature hibachi texture and flavor.
  5. Cook the Steak: While cooking the fried rice, sear the marinated NY strip steak on the hot griddle or pan to your preferred doneness, about 4-5 minutes per side for medium rare, depending on thickness. Let the steak rest briefly before slicing.
  6. Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, sriracha, and salt to taste to create a spicy and creamy dipping sauce to accompany the steak.
  7. Serve: Slice the steak and serve alongside generous portions of the hibachi fried rice. Drizzle or serve the sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Use cooked and cooled rice to prevent sogginess and achieve the perfect fried rice texture.
  • Adjust honey in the steak marinade to control sweetness.
  • Feel free to swap frozen mixed vegetables with fresh vegetables such as bell peppers, carrots, and snap peas for added crunch.
  • Make sure the cooking surface is very hot to get the characteristic sear and flavor of hibachi cooking.
  • Let the steak rest before slicing to retain juices.
  • For a gluten-free version, use tamari instead of soy sauce.
