Description

Crispy Smashed Sweet Potatoes are a delicious and easy-to-make side dish that combines tender boiled sweet potatoes with a crisp, golden-baked exterior. Perfectly seasoned with garlic, salt, and pepper, and optionally garnished with fresh herbs, this recipe offers a flavorful and healthy upgrade to your regular roast potatoes.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about 1 pound)
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Fresh herbs (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) to ensure it’s hot and ready for baking the potatoes.
  2. Prepare Sweet Potatoes: Scrub the sweet potatoes thoroughly to remove any dirt, then cut each into halves or quarters to allow even and quicker cooking.
  3. Boil Potatoes: Place the cut sweet potato pieces into salted boiling water. Cook for about 15 minutes or until they become fork-tender but still hold their shape. Drain and let them cool slightly so they are easier to handle.
  4. Smash Potatoes: Arrange the boiled sweet potato pieces on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Using the bottom of a glass or a potato masher, gently press each piece until it is flattened but still intact, creating more surface area for crisping.
  5. Season: Drizzle the extra virgin olive oil evenly over each smashed potato. Sprinkle with sea salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and, if desired, fresh herbs for enhanced flavor.
  6. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the edges turn golden brown and crispy.
  7. Serve: Remove from the oven and serve warm as a perfect side dish or snack.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, flip the potatoes halfway through baking.
  • Fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme, or parsley complement the flavor well.
  • Use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
  • Slightly smaller potato pieces will cook faster and crisp up more.
  • Sweet potatoes can also be seasoned with smoked paprika or chili flakes for a spicy kick.
