Ingredients
Scale
Cupcake Batter
- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
Decoration
- 1 batch of chocolate frosting (store-bought or homemade)
- Black fondant (for ears, eyes, and whiskers)
- Orange cupcake liners (12-16)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with orange cupcake liners to prepare for baking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, mixing them together evenly.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Add the eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients and beat on medium speed with an electric mixer for about 2 minutes to create a smooth batter.
- Incorporate Boiling Water: Carefully stir in the boiling water, which will thin out the batter and make the cupcakes moist and tender.
- Fill Cupcake Liners: Pour the batter into the prepared cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full to allow room for rising while baking.
- Bake the Cupcakes: Place the pan in the oven and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean, indicating they are fully cooked.
- Cool the Cupcakes: Let the cupcakes cool in the pan for 5 minutes initially, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before decorating.
- Decorate: Frost each cooled cupcake with chocolate frosting and use black fondant to craft cat features such as ears, eyes, and whiskers to complete the black cat theme.
Notes
- Use boiling water carefully when mixing to avoid burns and to ensure smooth batter consistency.
- Allow cupcakes to cool fully before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting.
- You can substitute the chocolate frosting with any preferred frosting flavor, but chocolate complements the cocoa batter best.
- Black fondant can be found or made at specialty baking stores; ensure it is pliable for easy shaping.
- Orange cupcake liners add a festive touch, but any color can be used based on occasion or preference.
