Description

Beef tips and rice is a hearty, comforting dish made with tender beef simmered in a savory brown gravy and served over fluffy white rice. It’s a family favorite that’s simple to prepare and packed with rich, meaty flavor—perfect for weeknight dinners or a cozy Sunday meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Marinade

  • 1 1/2 lbs beef stew meat or sirloin tips, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

Liquids and Seasonings

  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Thickening and Serving

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (slurry)
  • 3 cups cooked white rice
  • Chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef: In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef tips in a single layer and sear until browned on all sides, working in batches if needed to avoid overcrowding. Remove the beef and set it aside.
  2. Sauté Aromatics: Reduce the heat to medium in the same skillet. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 2–3 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
  3. Simmer the Beef: Return the browned beef to the skillet. Pour in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce. Sprinkle in the dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the skillet and simmer gently for 45 to 60 minutes, or until the beef is tender and the flavors meld.
  4. Thicken the Gravy: Stir in the cornstarch slurry to the beef mixture and simmer uncovered for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens to a smooth, rich consistency.
  5. Serve: Spoon the beef tips and gravy over warm cooked white rice. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired to add a fresh herbal note.

Notes

  • For extra richness, add a splash of red wine or a pat of butter at the end of cooking.
  • Serve with steamed green beans or roasted vegetables for a balanced meal.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
